About

About Yek Nava

The people behind Yek Nava, how each article about game soundtracks, rhythm games, learning music and listening is put together, and what we will not publish.

Start here

What you are looking at is a working blog. Old pieces stay up in the archive rather than quietly disappearing, including the ones that have aged badly.

We started publishing after realising that the useful information about game soundtracks, rhythm games, learning music and listening existed, but only in the heads of people who had no reason to write it down. Yek Nava writes it down.

Where we stop

What we do not do is predict outcomes. Nothing about game soundtracks, rhythm games, learning music and listening works that way, and pages that pretend otherwise are selling something.

How this is put together

We write from notes taken while doing the thing, not from a summary of other summaries. Where we are unsure, the page says so in plain words.

We buy what we write about. It is slower, it is more expensive, and it is the only arrangement that lets us say a thing was not worth it.

If you want the mechanics rather than the summary, the editorial policy has them, including what we refuse to publish.

What is filed here

  • Games. Soundtracks, rhythm games, composers and the music that makes online games memorable.
  • Music Basics. Learning instruments and understanding how music works, for adults starting from scratch.
  • Listening. Headphones, playlists and better ways to enjoy the music you already love.

Nothing gets filed under three headings at once. If a piece does not have an obvious home, that usually means it has not been thought through yet. The busiest sections are games, music basics and listening.

Who pays for this

The site pays for itself through a small number of outbound links. It has never been enough to change what gets written, and the day it is, we will say so here.

Bylines

You can see who wrote what, and you can see everything else they wrote. That is deliberate, because it makes a bad article expensive for the person who wrote it.

Darius Farahani, Music editor. Darius grew up with Persian classical music at home and video game soundtracks on his headphones. He edits Yek Nava and writes about how music shapes the way we remember games.

Elodie Marchand, Game music writer. Elodie plays rhythm games far more than is healthy and studied composition at evening classes. She writes about game composers, rhythm and the craft of interactive music.

Kwabena Ostrowski, Audio and listening writer. Kwabena repaired hi-fi equipment before he started writing. He covers headphones, playlists and the practical side of listening, with a dislike of marketing specs.

Why this name

People ask about the name. There is rarely a good story behind a domain, and there is not one here either. Yek Nava was available, it was short enough to say out loud, and it has been the name long enough now that changing it would be more confusing than keeping it.

Telling us we are wrong

Point at the sentence. Write to [email protected] or use the contact page. Factual errors are fixed quickly, and when a correction changes the conclusion of a piece we say so at the foot of the page rather than editing quietly.
